U.S. asks Syria's foreign minister Opposition Respect Rights of Minorities

Geneva - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United States (U.S.) Hillary Clinton urged the Syrian opposition members to convince the minorities that their rights will be respected if the regime of President Bashar al-Assad ended. Some minority groups fear the new government will be dominated by Sunni Muslims.

As reported by Reuters on Wednesday (7/12/2011), Clinton delivered this message when speaking with members of the Syrian National Council (SNC), a group that seeks democratic transition after the end of Assad's government later.

Some parties are concerned with the change of leadership in Syria, including Assad's Alawite minority sect and Christians, who fear the new government may be dominated by Sunni Muslims.

What began nine months ago as a peaceful protest against Assad, inspired by the movements in Tunisia and Egypt have been rolled close to civil war.

"Clearly, the transition to democracy not only includes the removal of the Assad regime. This means setting Syria in the rule of law and protect the universal rights of all citizens, regardless of differences sect, ethnicity or gender," Clinton said.

"The Syrian opposition is represented here recognize that the minority Syria have questions and concerns about their future and that they need to be convinced that Syria would be better off under a regime of tolerance and freedom that provide the opportunity and dignity and not on the basis of desire dictator," he explained.
