Iran also criticized the U.S. government is blocking Internet access to the site. The White House said the move shows that the Iranian regime does not trust its people.
"Through this action, the Iranian government once again demonstrated its commitment to build surveillance and censorship of the electronic curtain around his people," a statement from the White House as reported by AFP on Thursday (8/12/2011).
"Systematic efforts to withhold information the Iranian government for its citizens - to control what is seen and heard the Iranian people - will fail in the 21st century is when the technology to empower citizens around the world," remarked the White House.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the United States, Iran's welcome to create a similar virtual embassy aimed at Americans. It is said Toner, a virtual U.S. embassy to Iran are getting close to 500 thousand hits on the first day of release. But of that number only 9771 hits were detected originating from Iran.
U.S. and Iran has so far not had diplomatic relations since the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979. At that Iranians toppled the shah of Iran's pro-Western and occupied the U.S. embassy in Tehran for 444 days.
